Network Address Translation

  • translate between addresses inside local network to publicly routable addresses
  • specific ranges
  • allows to reuse same IP ranges in all kinds of (private) networks

Port Address Translation (PAT)

  • one outside routable address, multiple inside local addresses
  • using ports to address inside clients
